How Long Does It Take to Get an SBA Loan?
Plan on 30 to 90 days from application to money in the bank, depending on the program, the lender and how complete your file is. Here is the stage-by-stage timeline, what makes it slower, and what to do when you cannot wait.

How Long Does an SBA Loan Really Take?
A typical SBA 7(a) loan takes 30 to 60 days from a complete application to funding with a Preferred Lender, and 60 to 90 days with a lender that has to send the file to the SBA for approval. SBA Express loans are faster because the SBA responds to the lender within 36 hours; many close in two to four weeks. SBA 504 real-estate loans run longest, often 60 to 120 days, because an appraisal, environmental report and two lenders are involved. The single biggest variable is you: a complete document package on day one can cut weeks off the clock.
SBA Loan Timelines by Program
“How long does an SBA loan take?” has a different answer for each SBA program, because each one involves a different amount of paperwork and a different approval path. The ranges below are what RAN Funding and the SBA lenders in our network see on complete files in 2026.
| Program | Typical time to funding | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SBA 7(a) Standard, PLP lender | 30–60 days | Lender approves under delegated authority; no wait for the SBA |
| SBA 7(a) Standard, non-PLP lender | 60–90 days | File goes to the SBA Loan Guaranty Processing Center for approval |
| SBA 7(a) Small Loan (up to $350,000) | 30–45 days | Lighter underwriting and a 1.10x cash-flow test since March 2026 |
| SBA Express (up to $500,000) | 2–4 weeks | SBA responds within 36 hours; lender uses its own forms and process |
| SBA 504 (real estate and heavy equipment) | 60–120 days | Appraisal, environmental review, a CDC and a bank both underwrite |
| SBA Microloan (up to $50,000) | 2–6 weeks | Non-profit intermediary makes the decision locally |
Where the weeks go on a standard 7(a) loan
Complete, well-organized files run at the short end of every stage. Missing documents and unexplained issues add weeks at the underwriting stage.
The Five Stages, and How Long Each One Takes
- Pre-qualification and packaging (1–2 weeks). A specialist reviews your credit, tax returns and bank statements, confirms SBA eligibility, and assembles the package: SBA Form 1919, personal financial statements, debt schedule, business plan or use-of-funds memo. This is the stage you control. Owners who arrive with everything from the SBA requirements checklist finish it in days.
- Lender underwriting (2–4 weeks). The lender’s credit team verifies tax transcripts with the IRS (Form 4506-C), runs credit, calculates debt service coverage, values collateral and writes the credit memo. Questions come back in rounds; answering within 24 hours keeps the file moving.
- Approval and SBA authorization (3 days–3 weeks). A Preferred Lender (PLP) approves internally and submits for a loan number, typically same-day. A non-PLP lender submits the whole file to the SBA, which can take two to three weeks to review.
- Commitment and closing (1–2 weeks). You receive a commitment letter and closing checklist: insurance binders, entity documents, landlord waivers, equity injection proof, any appraisal or environmental report. Legal review and document signing follow.
- Funding (1–3 days). Once every condition is cleared, funds are wired. For a business purchase this is the closing date; for working capital it is simply the day the money lands.
What Makes an SBA Loan Faster
- Use a Preferred Lender (PLP). Delegated authority removes the SBA review step entirely. This is the single largest time saving available.
- Deliver a complete file on day one. Two years of business and personal returns, year-to-date financials, a debt schedule and bank statements, all before the lender asks.
- Keep the use of funds simple. Working capital, equipment and refinancing close faster than business purchases or construction, which require valuations, appraisals and third-party reports.
- Choose SBA Express for amounts up to $500,000. The 50% guarantee lets lenders use their own paperwork and the SBA answers within 36 hours.
- Answer every underwriting question the same day. Most multi-week delays are a lender waiting on the borrower, not the other way round.
- Disclose problems up front. A prior lien, a slow year or a past bankruptcy explained in a cover memo gets worked around; discovered in underwriting it restarts the clock.
What Slows an SBA Loan Down
Every one of these adds time, and several of them add it twice because the SBA’s 1 October 2026 rules (SOP 50 10 8.1) require more verification on business purchases than before.
| Delay | Typical cost in time | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Missing or outdated financials | 1–3 weeks | Personal financial statements must be dated within 90 days; interim financials within 120 days |
| Tax transcript mismatch | 2–4 weeks | Make sure the returns you submit are exactly what was filed; amended returns need the amendment |
| Business acquisition | 3–6 weeks extra | Business valuation, quality-of-earnings report on purchases of $3 million or more, seller tax returns and transcripts |
| Commercial real estate | 4–8 weeks extra | Appraisal and environmental (Phase I) report ordered by the lender |
| Equity injection not seasoned | 1–2 weeks | Lenders must verify the source of your 10%; have statements ready |
| Franchise not in the SBA Franchise Directory | Weeks, or a decline | Confirm the brand is listed before you apply |
| Non-PLP lender | 2–3 weeks | Ask whether the lender has Preferred Lender status before you start |
When You Cannot Wait 30 to 90 Days
Some needs will not sit still for an SBA timeline: a payroll gap, an inventory order with a deadline, an equipment failure, a contract that needs crew on site Monday. SBA capital is the cheapest we arrange and also the slowest, and the right question is whether the money is funding a plan you chose or a shortfall that chose you.
A common path we arrange is a bridge: a business term loan or line of credit now, with the SBA application running in parallel. Note that since June 2025 an SBA loan cannot be used to refinance a merchant cash advance, so if you bridge with an MCA, plan to pay it from cash flow rather than from the SBA proceeds. See how fast you can actually get a business loan for realistic timelines by product.
How RAN Funding Handles the Clock
RAN Funding is a broker. One specialist packages your file, pre-screens it against the lender’s credit box, and submits it to an SBA lender in our network that already lends in your industry and at your loan size. That matching step is where most of the saved time comes from: a file sent to the wrong lender can lose three weeks and come back as a decline. We tell you at the pre-qualification stage whether SBA is realistic for your file, and if it is not, which faster product fits. Our planning estimate for 7(a) is 30 to 60 days on a complete file.
Common Questions
How long does SBA loan approval take after submitting documents?
With a Preferred Lender, underwriting and approval typically take two to four weeks after the lender has a complete file. With a non-PLP lender, add two to three weeks for the SBA’s own review.
Which SBA loan is the fastest?
SBA Express. The SBA responds to the lender within 36 hours and lenders use their own forms, so Express loans of up to $500,000 often fund in two to four weeks. Microloans through local intermediaries can also move in a few weeks.
How long does an SBA 504 loan take?
Usually 60 to 120 days. A 504 project involves a bank loan, a Certified Development Company debenture, an appraisal and often an environmental report, and the debenture funds on a monthly cycle after closing.
Can I speed up an SBA loan?
Yes: use a Preferred Lender, deliver a complete document package on day one, keep the use of funds simple, answer underwriting questions the same day, and disclose any credit or tax issues up front with a written explanation.
What happens if I need money before the SBA loan funds?
Many owners bridge with a short-term product such as a term loan or line of credit that funds in one to three days, then keep the SBA application moving in parallel. An SBA loan cannot refinance a merchant cash advance, so plan any bridge accordingly.
