Denied for an SBA Loan? What to Do Next

An SBA decline is a decision by one lender about one file on one day. Here are the real reasons files get turned down in 2026, how to fix each one, when to reapply, and the products that fund in days while you do.

What to Do After an SBA Loan Denial

First, get the reason in writing — the lender must give you one. Then sort it into one of three buckets: an SBA eligibility problem (ownership, delinquent federal debt, ineligible industry), which no lender can fix; a credit or cash-flow problem (score under 680, coverage under 1.10x, open collections), which you can fix in 60 to 180 days; or a lender-fit problem (wrong industry, wrong loan size, non-PLP bank), which a different SBA lender may approve next month. In the meantime, a term loan, line of credit or revenue-based product can fund in 24 to 72 hours, and an SBA loan can follow once the file is ready.

Why SBA Loans Get Denied in 2026

Lenders rarely say “no” for a reason that is unique to you. The same handful of issues account for most declines, and several of them became more common after the SBA’s 2025 and 2026 rule changes.

Reason Which bucket Fixable?
Personal credit under the lender’s floor (usually 680) Credit Yes, typically 2–6 months
Debt service coverage under 1.10x (1.25x on business purchases since October 2026) Cash flow Yes: pay down short-term debt or reduce the request
Too many merchant cash advance positions Cash flow Yes, but an SBA loan cannot refinance them
Open collections, tax liens or judgments Credit Yes: pay or document a plan
Unverifiable tax returns or transcript mismatch File quality Yes: file amendments, provide transcripts
Equity injection not documented File quality Yes: season the funds, show the source
Under two years in business Lender fit Time, or a different lender
Industry the lender avoids (restaurants, trucking, cannabis-adjacent, speculative) Lender fit Yes: a lender that works your industry
Ownership not 100% U.S. citizens or nationals (rule since March 2026) SBA eligibility Not under current rules; the rule is under legal challenge
Delinquent federal debt or prior government loss SBA eligibility Only by resolving the debt
Ineligible business type (passive real estate, lending, gambling) SBA eligibility No

Step One: Get the Real Reason

Under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act a lender has to tell you why, in writing, within 30 days. Ask for the specific factor, not the category. “Insufficient cash flow” is a category; “DSCR of 0.98x after the new loan payment” is a reason you can act on. Ask what number would have worked. Most loan officers will tell you, because they want the file back once it clears.

Do not reapply blindly. Each application is a hard credit inquiry and another set of questions. Fix the stated reason first; then reapply with the fix documented in a one-page cover memo.

If It Was Credit

  1. Pull all three bureau reports and find what moved the score: utilization, a late payment, a collection, too many inquiries.
  2. Pay revolving balances under 30% of limits and hold them there for two statement cycles. This alone moves most scores 20 to 40 points.
  3. Clear open collections and liens or set up a documented payment plan. RAN Funding’s SBA screen requires no outstanding collections.
  4. Stop applying. No new credit for 90 days before the next SBA application.
  5. Reapply when the middle score is 680 or better. See what credit score you need for an SBA loan.

If It Was Cash Flow

Coverage is the ratio lenders care about most: net operating income (or EBITDA) divided by all annual debt payments including the proposed loan. Since 1 March 2026 the floor on 7(a) small loans is 1.10x; since 1 October 2026 business purchases need 1.25x on historical results, with projections no longer allowed to carry the test.

  • Pay off one short-term position. A merchant cash advance with a $900 daily payment costs about $225,000 a year in debt service. Removing it can turn a 0.9x file into a 1.3x file.
  • Ask for less. A $400,000 request that fails at 1.05x may pass at $300,000.
  • Stretch the term. Ten years instead of seven lowers the annual payment the ratio is tested against.
  • Add back what is legitimate. Owner compensation above market, one-time expenses and depreciation are routinely added back; make sure your accountant has.
  • Wait for the next tax return if the most recent year was the weak one and the current year is clearly stronger.

Since June 2025 an SBA loan cannot be used to pay off merchant cash advances or factoring agreements, so if MCA payments are what broke the ratio, the path is to retire them from cash flow or with a term loan, then apply for SBA.

If It Was Lender Fit

SBA lenders are not interchangeable. Each has industries it likes, loan sizes it is set up for, and a credit box of its own. A restaurant file declined by a bank that avoids restaurants is not a bad file; it is a misrouted one. A $150,000 request declined by a lender that prefers $1 million-plus deals is the same. This is the category a broker exists to solve. RAN Funding places SBA files with lenders in our network that already lend in your industry and at your size, and we tell you up front if no SBA lender is a realistic fit so you do not burn months finding out.

Faster Alternatives While You Fix the File

Most owners who are declined for SBA still qualify for something, and often for something that funds this week. The trade is cost: these products are priced for speed and for the risk a bank would not take.

Product Amount Funds in Typical fit after an SBA decline
Business term loan $20K–$5M 48–72 hours Steady revenue, credit 600+, wants a fixed payment
Business line of credit $10K–$2M 48–72 hours Recurring gaps, 1+ year in business, $250K+ revenue, 650+ credit
Revenue-based financing $10K–$2M 72 hours Strong deposits, weaker credit
Working capital loan $10K–$1M Same day Short-term need, repayment matched to cash flow
Equipment financing Full purchase price 48–72 hours The need is a specific machine or vehicle
Invoice factoring $20K–$5M About a week B2B invoices and slow-paying customers

The strategy that works most often: use one of these to meet the immediate need, run it clean for six to twelve months, and reapply for SBA with a stronger coverage ratio and a track record of payments. When and How to Reapply

  • Wait until the stated reason is fixed, not just improved. If the floor was 680, reapply at 690, not 675.
  • Go to a different lender unless the original one asked you to come back; a second look at the same bank rarely changes the answer.
  • Lead with the fix. A cover memo that says “declined in April for 1.02x coverage; paid off the Fundbox line in June; current coverage 1.34x” is read.
  • Bring a complete file. Everything on the SBA loan requirements list, dated within the 90- and 120-day windows.
  • Use a Preferred Lender so the file does not go to the SBA for a second review.

Common Questions

Can you reapply for an SBA loan after being denied?

Yes. There is no waiting period. Reapply when the reason for the decline is fixed, ideally with a different SBA lender that fits your industry and loan size, and with a cover memo explaining what changed.

Does an SBA loan denial hurt your credit?

The denial itself is not reported. The hard inquiry the lender made stays on your report for two years and can cost a few points, which is why you should fix the file before applying again.

Why would a bank deny an SBA loan if the SBA guarantees it?

The SBA guarantees 50% to 85% of the loan, not all of it, and the lender has to follow SBA rules on top of its own credit policy. Lenders decline files that fail either layer, or that fall outside the industries and loan sizes they are set up for.

Can I get a business loan right after an SBA denial?

Usually. Term loans, lines of credit and revenue-based products are underwritten mainly on bank deposits and fund in one to three days. They cost more than SBA capital and are best used as a bridge while the SBA file is repaired.

Can an SBA loan pay off a merchant cash advance?

Not since June 2025. SOP 50 10 8 removed merchant cash advances and factoring agreements from the list of debts a 7(a) loan may refinance. Retire them from cash flow or with a term loan, then apply for SBA.
