The Short Answer

A business loan is money a company borrows for business use and repays over an agreed period, plus the cost of borrowing. The funds can cover almost anything the business needs: payroll, inventory, equipment, a second location, or a gap between sending an invoice and getting paid.

That is the whole definition. Everything else is a question of which type fits, how much a business can get, and how quickly the money arrives.

How A Business Loan Works

Every business loan has the same four parts:

  1. The amount. What the business receives. Through RAN Funding, most clients receive $20,000 to $500,000+.
  2. The term. How long the business has to repay. Short-term products run months; Business Term Loans run up to 3 years; SBA loans run longer.
  3. The total payback. The amount borrowed plus the cost of the financing. This is the number to compare between offers.
  4. The repayment method. How and how often payments are collected.

A business applies, the funder reviews the company’s finances, an offer is made, and once the agreement is signed the money is deposited into the business bank account.

Business Loan Vs. Business Funding

People use the two terms for the same thing, but they are not identical. “Business loan” describes one structure: borrow a sum, repay it on a schedule. “Business funding” is the wider category, and it includes products that are not technically loans, such as revenue-based financing. We explain the difference in Business Funding vs. Business Loan.

What Funders Look At

For an established company, the review centers on how the business performs:

  • Time in business. Most clients have 1+ year in business.
  • Revenue. Most clients have $250,000 or more in annual revenue.
  • Bank statements. Recent business bank statements show deposits, balances and consistency.
  • Existing obligations. Any financing the business is already repaying.
