Business Line of Credit vs Business Credit Card: Which Should You Use?

A business credit card and a business line of credit both give you revolving credit you can reuse, and that is where the similarity ends. One is for card spend under $50,000 with rewards and a 0% window; the other is for cash in the bank account at limits up to $2 million. Most established businesses should hold both and use each for what it is built for. This guide compares them on limits, cost, cash access, credit impact and approval odds in October 2026.

Line of Credit or Credit Card: Which Is Better for a Business?

Use a business credit card for recurring purchases you pay off monthly (software, supplies, ads, travel), where a 0% intro period or 1% to 2% rewards make it the cheapest money available and limits of $5,000 to $50,000 are enough. Use a business line of credit when you need cash, not card spend: payroll, inventory, a slow receivable or a deposit to a vendor that does not take cards, at limits of $10,000 to $2 million and 8% to 36% APR equivalent (bank lines 8% to 11% with Prime at 7.00%). Cards charge 20% to 29% APR on carried balances and 3% to 5% plus a higher rate on cash advances, which is why carrying a balance on a card is almost always the wrong tool. A $1.5 million services or real estate firm spending $10,000 a month on tools and marketing typically holds a card for that float and rewards, and a $100,000 to $200,000 line for real gaps.

How Established Businesses Use Both

  • Card: software, ads, supplies, travel and anything a vendor accepts cards for, paid in full, rewards collected. Keep utilization under 30% because many cards report to personal bureaus.
  • Line: payroll, inventory buys, deposits, tax bills, receivables gaps and emergencies, drawn as cash and repaid from receipts. See how to use a business line of credit.
  • Never: cash advances on the card or carrying a card balance for months; both cost two to three times what a line does.
  • Sequence: a card is usually the first credit a young business gets; a line follows at six to twelve months of deposits. Both report to business bureaus if you choose lenders that do.

Common Questions

Is a business line of credit better than a business credit card?

For cash needs, larger amounts and anything carried beyond a month, yes: lines cost 8% to 36% APR equivalent against 20% to 29% on a card and provide cash, not just card spend. For monthly purchases paid in full, a card with rewards or a 0% intro period is cheaper. Most businesses hold both.

Can I get cash from a business credit card?

Only through a cash advance, which carries a 3% to 5% fee, a higher APR with no grace period and a lower limit. A line of credit puts cash in your bank account the same or next day at a far lower cost.

Does a business line of credit affect personal credit?

Most lines report to business credit bureaus rather than personal ones, and pre-qualification is a soft pull. Many business credit cards report to personal bureaus, so a high card balance can lower the owner’s score.

Which is easier to get, a line of credit or a credit card?

A credit card: approval is based mostly on the owner’s personal credit (about 670+) and stated revenue, in minutes. A line of credit is underwritten on six to twelve months of business deposits and takes one to three days online. In 2026, 45% of line applicants were approved in full.
