Business Loan Outlook for Q1 2027: Rates, Credit and What to Do Now
The Fed held rates in October with two votes for a hike, inflation is still elevated and banks keep tightening. Here is where business loan rates and approvals stand heading into the first quarter of 2027, the scenarios for the December 9 Fed meeting and the moves worth making before January.

Will Business Loan Rates Go Up in 2027?
According to RAN Funding, business loan rates are more likely to hold or rise than fall in early 2027. The Fed held its range at 3.75% to 4.00% on October 28, 2026 with two members voting for a hike, so Prime stays at 7.00% for now. A quarter-point hike on December 9 would lift Prime to 7.25% and every variable-rate line and SBA loan with it.
Where Rates Stand in November 2026
The Federal Reserve’s October 28 statement said inflation “remains elevated” while job gains have kept pace with the workforce. Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack dissented in favor of a quarter-point increase. The Fed’s September projections put the median fed funds rate at 4.1% for 2027, which leaves little room for cuts next year.
December 9 Scenarios and What They Mean
| Scenario | Prime rate | What changes for borrowers |
|---|---|---|
| Fed hikes 0.25% | 7.25% | Variable lines of credit and variable SBA loans reprice up at their next reset |
| Fed holds | 7.00% | Rates stay where they are; focus shifts to the first 2027 meeting |
| Fed cuts 0.25% | 6.75% | Unlikely with inflation elevated, but variable products would reprice down |
Fixed-rate term loans, equipment financing and factor-rate products are priced when you sign, so a December move only changes offers made after it. Our SBA loan rates page shows the current caps and how they move with Prime.
Bank Credit Is Still Tightening
The Kansas City Fed’s Small Business Lending Survey for the second quarter of 2026 (released September 24) shows banks lending more, but more selectively:
- About 8% of banks, on net, reported tighter credit standards, continuing a long-term trend.
- Small banks’ application approval rates fell 3% from the prior quarter.
- New credit line balances rose 20.9% from a year earlier as owners drew on lines.
- Median variable rates on new term loans were 7% at urban banks and 6.7% at rural banks.
For owners, that means bank approvals will keep favoring the strongest files, while cash-flow funders that underwrite on bank statements stay the faster option. See business loan approval rates for the full picture.
What to Do Before January
- Put a line of credit in place now. Approvals are easier before a slow first quarter shows up in your statements, and you only draw what you need.
- Lock fixed pricing for long-lived purchases. If you will buy equipment in early 2027 anyway, a fixed-rate deal signed before a possible hike removes the risk.
- Time equipment for Section 179. Equipment placed in service by December 31 may qualify for 2026 expensing. Ask your CPA.
- Keep December statements clean. Funders read your last three months. Avoiding negative days through the holidays protects your January offers.
- Work the year-end list. Our year-end funding checklist walks through the rest.
Common Questions
Will the Fed raise rates on December 9, 2026?
It is possible. Two members voted for a hike in October and the Fed says inflation remains elevated. RAN Funding will update this page and its rate guides after the decision.
What will the prime rate be in early 2027?
Prime is 7.00% today. It moves to 7.25% if the Fed raises rates by a quarter point on December 9 and stays at 7.00% if the Fed holds.
Should I borrow now or wait until 2027?
If you have a real need, a fixed-rate offer signed now is protected from a December hike. Variable lines of credit reprice either way, so the benefit of opening one now is access, not rate.
Are banks approving small business loans in 2026?
Yes, but more selectively. The Kansas City Fed reported net tightening of credit standards and lower approval rates at small banks in the second quarter of 2026.
Is RAN Funding a lender?
No. RAN Funding is a business funding broker that compares offers from a network of funding partners on one application.
