Business Loans for Veteran-Owned Businesses: SBA Fee Relief, Certifications and What Gets Approved

Veteran-owned businesses have two real advantages in financing: SBA fee relief on loans to veteran-owned firms, and certification (SBA VetCert, formerly VA CVE) that opens set-aside federal contracts worth financing. Beyond that, the products and the underwriting are the same as for any established business. This guide covers the veteran-specific pieces and the mainstream options for October 2026, with costs at Prime 7.00%.

Are There Business Loans for Veterans?

There is no veterans-only loan product, but three things are specific to veteran owners: (1) SBA guarantee-fee relief on 7(a) and Express loans to businesses at least 51% veteran-owned (the SBA’s Veterans Advantage terms, which reduce or waive the upfront guarantee fee depending on loan size and the fiscal-year schedule); (2) SBA Veteran Small Business Certification (VetCert), which qualifies the business for service-disabled and veteran-owned set-aside contracts, and those contracts can be financed through factoring and PO financing; and (3) the standard products: revenue-based financing from 500 credit and $20,000 a month, online lines of credit and term loans from 600 credit and $20,000 a month, equipment financing from 550 credit, and bank and SBA loans from 680 credit and two years. Military-affiliated credit unions and some banks run veteran programs with relationship pricing worth asking about.

How Lenders Read Veteran-Owned Business Files

  • Ownership must be 51%+ veteran and documented (DD-214, ownership records) for SBA fee relief and VetCert.
  • Federal contracts are financeable as receivables; factors and PO lenders underwrite the agency, not your history.
  • Deposits in a business account size the online products; six months is enough to start.
  • Personal credit still sets the tier: 600 for online lines and term loans, 680 for banks and SBA.
  • Ask about military-affiliated credit unions for lines and equipment at relationship pricing when you have the time.

Common Questions

What is the SBA Veterans Advantage?

A fee-relief program on SBA 7(a) and Express loans to businesses at least 51% owned by veterans, service-disabled veterans, reservists, National Guard members or certain spouses. The exact relief depends on loan size and the fiscal-year fee schedule; confirm the current terms with the lender.

Do I need VetCert to get a loan?

No. VetCert matters for federal set-aside contracts; loans are underwritten on the business. The certification plus a contract makes factoring and PO financing easier.

Can a veteran with a thin credit file get business funding?

Yes. Revenue-based financing approves from 500 credit on six months of deposits, and equipment financing from 550 to 600. Twelve months of clean payments then open lines and term loans.

Are there grants for veteran-owned businesses?

A few, usually small and competitive. Treat them as a supplement; plan the financing with loans and lines.

Is RAN Funding a lender?

No. RAN Funding is a business financing broker. We present your application to the funders in our network that fit your profile and show you the approvals that come back; the funding partner sets the approval, amount, rate, fees and terms. RAN Funding is paid by the lender, not by you.
