Business Loans With an ITIN Instead of a Social Security Number
Many established U.S. businesses are owned by people who file taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) rather than a Social Security number. Banks and SBA lenders generally will not lend to them, but some alternative lenders will, on the same revenue and time-in-business standards as any other file. This guide explains which lenders consider an ITIN, what they ask for, which products are not available, and how to keep the ITIN valid before you apply.
Can You Get a Business Loan with an ITIN?
Yes, from specific lenders. Some lenders in RAN Funding’s network accept an owner’s ITIN in place of a Social Security number; most banks and all SBA lenders do not. The ITIN does not lower the bar: the business still needs an EIN, a business bank account in its name, $20,000 or more a month in deposits and, ideally, 12 months in business (some files qualify from 6 months, with fewer options). SBA 7(a) and 504 loans are off the table, because since March 1, 2026 the SBA requires every owner to be a U.S. citizen or national.
Which Lenders Consider an ITIN
| Lender type | ITIN accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Banks and credit unions | Rarely | Most require an SSN for the owner’s guarantee and credit pull |
| SBA 7(a) and 504 lenders | No | 100% of owners must be U.S. citizens or nationals since March 1, 2026; green-card holders are also ineligible |
| Alternative lenders and revenue-based funders | Some | Only specific lenders; underwriting is on business bank statements, so deposits matter most |
| CDFIs | Some | Mission lenders; slower (2–6 weeks), smaller amounts, case by case |
Because fewer lenders compete for an ITIN file, comparing offers on total repayment matters more, not less. See factor rate vs APR.
What ITIN Lenders Ask For
- A valid ITIN and the IRS assignment letter (CP565).
- A government-issued photo ID the lender accepts (most ask for an unexpired passport).
- An EIN for the business and formation documents (articles of organization or incorporation).
- A business bank account in the business’s name with the last 3–4 months of statements showing $20,000 or more a month in deposits.
- Time in business: 12 months is the target; some lenders consider 6+ months.
- Recent tax returns filed with the ITIN for larger amounts.
Personal credit still matters: lenders that accept ITINs can pull a credit report built under the ITIN. Full document list: what documents you need for a business loan.
Keep the ITIN Valid Before You Apply
An ITIN expires if it is not used on a federal tax return at least once in three consecutive years. An expired ITIN can stop an application cold, because the lender verifies it. If you have not filed with it recently, renew it with IRS Form W-7 before applying, and file business and personal returns on time: a filed return is also the document that supports larger amounts.
Products That Fit an ITIN File
| Product | Typically available with ITIN? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Working capital / revenue-based financing | Yes, from specific lenders | Sized on deposits |
| Merchant cash advance | Yes, from specific lenders | Sized on card sales or deposits |
| Online term loans and lines of credit | Sometimes | Depends on the lender’s guarantee and credit-pull policy |
| Equipment financing | Sometimes | Equipment is collateral; lender-specific |
| SBA 7(a) / 504 | No | Citizenship rule since March 1, 2026 |
Requirements and costs for each product are on business loan requirements.
Red Flags in “No SSN” Loan Ads
- Guaranteed approval or “no documents” promises.
- Upfront fees before an offer is in writing.
- Requests to send money to “verify” the account.
- Offers with no total repayment amount stated.
How RAN Funding Handles ITIN Files
Tell us at the start that the owner has an ITIN. A specialist (in English or Spanish) sends the file only to the lenders that accept ITINs, so you are not declined for the wrong reason, and shows you the offers side by side with total repayment. RAN Funding is a business financing broker, not a lender. RAN Funding is paid by the lender, not by you.
Common Questions
Do I need an SSN to get a business loan?
Not always. Specific alternative lenders accept an ITIN; banks rarely do and SBA lenders cannot.
Can ITIN holders get an SBA loan?
No. Since March 1, 2026, SBA 7(a) and 504 loans require 100% of owners to be U.S. citizens or nationals living in the U.S.
Are the requirements lower with an ITIN?
No. The business needs the same $20,000+ a month in deposits and time in business as any other file; fewer lenders participate.
Does my business need an EIN?
Yes. Lenders lend to the business, which needs an EIN and a bank account in its own name.
What if my ITIN expired?
Renew it with Form W-7 before applying; lenders verify it.
Is RAN Funding a lender?
No. RAN Funding is a business financing broker. The lender sets approval and terms. RAN Funding is paid by the lender, not by you.
